A barrier island off the coast of Sarasota, Lido Key, Florida, is home to a full-time population of around 1,500. The island is a popular destination for visitors, as it is home to some of the area's most beautiful beaches and temperate weather. Lido Key is connected to the mainland by John Ringling Causeway. It is surrounded by four bodies of water -- the Gulf of Mexico, Big Pass, Sarasota Bay and Brushy Bayou.
Lido Key faces the Gulf of Mexico, and the area is popular for its seasonal nightclub scene catering to the visitors. It has three mains beaches: North Lido Beach, a private beach best for secluded sunning sessions; Lido Beach, the more populated beach dotted with concession stands, restrooms, playgrounds and even a freshwater pool. Lido Beach has lifeguards on duty year-round to protect visitors. Finally, South Lido Park at the island's southern tip offers 100 acres of not only beach but also restrooms, playgrounds, grilling equipment, nature and canoeing trails, volleyball courts and an observation tower.
Just a short drive away from Lido is St. Armands Keys, which features top-tier hotels and some of the area's most exquisite shops and boutiques, in addition to fine dining options of all flavors. Bridges link these islands to Sarasota and to Longboat Key. There are plenty of options for activities like tennis and golf in the surrounding area, as well as for fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and boating in the area's warm blue waters.
Mote Aquarium is a popular attraction on the island and is visited by many who come to the area throughout the year. Children who reside here on the island are served by schools in the in the Sarasota County Public School system. Though there are no institutes of higher education on the island, there are several nearby: the New College of Florida, a public liberal arts college; Ringling College of Art and Design, a private art school; and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus.
