Siesta Key Real Estate Information

A barrier island off the western coast of the state in the Gulf region, Siesta Key, Florida, is a part of Sarasota County. The key is situated between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, and parts of it lie within the city limits of Sarasota the city. At the time of the 2000 census, the key was measured to be home to a population of just over 7,000, though when part-time residents are taken into consideration, the population increases to around 24,000.

Siesta Key is considered a census-designated place originally named Sarasota Key by European cartographers during exploration that began around 1513 and the key's name was changed in the 1920s. It is eight miles long and makes up an area of 3.5 square miles, of which almost half is water. The key was founded in 1846. Residents in 2000 were measured to have an annual household income of around $66,500.

Siesta Key is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it's about 55 miles south of Tampa. Two bridges connect it back to Sarasota's mainland. The key is famously popular with tourists, many of whom come to enjoy the sun and the ocean on Siesta Beach's shores, which are said to be composed of 99% quartz.

The key is great for snorkeling, as Point of Rocks, a limestone formation that extends into the Gulf of Mexico from the key's  western shore, provides a home to a large variety of underwater life. Siesta Beach has 40 acres and is one of the largest beaches in the area. Children living in the key are served by the Sarasota County School District, and their schools include Phillippi Shores Elementary School, Brookside Middle School and Sarasota High School.
